Malthouse Theatre

The Brief

Browns Precision Welding was thrilled to be contracted to build the outdoor stage at the Malthouse Theatre positioned in the heart of Melbourne. This unique space serves as a vibrant venue for music, theatre, and exhibitions, catering to a diverse array of live performances.

The project required the construction of an outdoor theatre space with a seating capacity of up to 312 guests. The grand stage measuring 8.8 x 10.7 metres, was designed to host a wide range of events, including music, dance, comedy and theatre at the beginning of every summer season.

Design and Engineering

The stage columns at 8.5 metres tall utilised 400mm alloy box truss, and for the roof structure we used 500mm Alloy Box Truss, primarily for strength and increased load capacity. Four rolling blocks were incorporated into the design to facilitate easier and quicker roof assembly. Resulting from extended collaboration, Browns Precision Welding cantilevered the roof to improve the sight lines for the audience, whilst also providing greater flexibility for lighting and audio.

The Malthouse Outdoor Stage allows audiences to immerse themselves in an unforgettable summer filled with brilliant live music, comedy, cabaret, and a wide variety of entertainment. Browns Precision Welding’s commitment to understanding the project’s scope and requirements resulted in the successful construction of a premier outdoor stage. The use of advanced materials and innovative design techniques ensured a seamless and efficient assembly, setting the stage for countless memorable performances.
